I would like to thank the society for their invitation to judge Smooth Haired Dachshunds, for their hospitality, to my efficient steward, but most of all to the exhibitors for entering and entrusting me to appraise their beautiful hounds. I did not find any real causes for concern, temperaments were good, and all had scissor bites and were presented in good condition. I thoroughly enjoyed my day and thought my main winners lovely examples of their breed. Thank you. MPD 1 Hunts, Carpaccio Trouble In Store, 8mth B/T who presented a lovely balanced outline. Strong, masculine conical shaped head, dark almond shaped eye, good length to foreface and strong jaw. He has a good reach of neck, prominent. Pro-sternum, (but not over exaggerated), nice length of keel with good ground clearance, deep, well sprung ribs that are carried well back to a short loin, well developed rear quarters that have good angulations and turn of stifle. He has good bone and tight feet and moved with lovely reach and drive. A lovely baby, with everything in the right place for the future. R.B.D and B.P.I.B. PGD 1  Linacre's Rosenket Rigoletto, 3yr B/T, with that typical dachshund aloof and noble expression, head is correct conical shape, with a nice dark almond shaped eye. He has a reasonable length of neck, prominent pro sternum, but I would prefer more lay back to shoulder and width all through, however, his ribbing has good depth and is carried back into a strong loin and rear quarters. He has good bone and moved around the ring with drive and enthusiasm. LD 1 Cox, Cobo and Fellows, Ralines Dark Knight, Mature B/T who presented a nice, overall balanced picture with conical shaped head, dark almond shaped eye and ears well set on. He has a good reach of neck, prominent pro sternum with an oval thorax that has good width and fill. His ribs are well sprung, deep and carried well back into a strong loin and broad, well developed rear quarters that have a good turn of stifle and "hammy" hocks. He has good bone and well padded feet which he used to move with reach and drive in profile and out and back. OD 1 Armstrongs Lauralee Nicholas Nickleby , 21mth B/T who instantly caught the eye, due to his overall make, shape, and balance. Lovely strong, masculine houndy head, dark almond shaped eye, good proportion of skull to muzzle and slight arch to bridge of nose, giving a typical dachshund expression of nobility and aloofness. He has a lovely length of neck, prominent pro sternum without exaggeration, well laid back shoulders and an oval thorax that has width, and is well filled in. He has a good length of keel that has good ground clearance and is carried well back. His ribs are nicely sprung, with good length and depth, strong, short loin with his underline gently inclining into his abdomen. His rear quarters are broad and well developed with good angulations creating a lovely bend of stifle and powerful "hammy" thighs that are deep and broad. He has good bone and tight, well padded feet and all these attributes enabling him to move with ease and balance displaying reach and drive in profile, and was parallel out and back, all the time maintaining his top line. A lovely example of this breed creating a balanced picture being "all of a piece" and was presented in super condition with a lovely "bloom" to him. Was pleased to award him BOB. 2 Hunts, CH Cwmdarian Hogans Hero At Carpaccio JW, Mature B/T who is a prolific winner, slightly longer cast than class winner, but similar comments apply to him. On the day I just preferred the overall balance and height to length ratio of winner. Two lovely examples with lots of qualities to pass on to the next generation. JB 1 Smith, Connor& Sorrell`s, Lady Godiva V D Mibaf`s Hoeve At Conchur (Imp Ned) 1yr old chocolate dapple, medium sized bitch, correct conical shaped head and almond eye, good reach of neck, prominent fore chest, adequate ground clearance, but needs more infill and width to thorax, continuing throughout  which hopefully will improve as she matures. Her ribs were well sprung and carried back into a short loin and well developed rear quarters. She has good bone and moved freely around the ring, but needs to strengthen and mature. She presents with a nice balanced outline, still a "raw" baby, but with lots of promise for the future. 2 Paterson`s, Phaeland Sent Direct To Amblesque, Lovely clear red coloured bitch, different in type to winner, moved with drive and enthusiasm and presented in lovely condition. LB 1 Burke & Manston`s, Bonavoir Testa Rossa, Mature 4yr old red bitch, lovely happy temperament never stopped wagging her tail, good overall balance of front and rear quarters. She has a conical, correctly balanced head, super feminine expression and dark almond shaped eye. Reach of neck is o.k. with a well developed fore chest that has good infill and width. She has a lovely length of keel, ribs which are well sprung, deep and carried well back to a short loin, broad well developed rear quarters and super hammy thighs that have good depth and width. She stands on good bone and feet and moved with plenty of reach and drive. A lovely sound and honest bitch with nothing over done. Happy to award her R.B.B. OB 1 Hunts, Ch Sontag Shanda Leah JW, A super mature red bitch and easy to see why she is a champion. She has a super correct head a dark almond shaped eye, feminine expression, but with an air of arrogance and aloofness as if she's looking down her lovely nose at you. She has a lovely length of neck, well laid back shoulders, prominent pro sternum, and oval thorax that has good fill and width. Her ribs are well sprung, deep and carried well back to a strong, short loin, broad well developed rear quarters and hammy thighs that had depth and width, all supported on good bone and tight feet. She moved around the ring, using all her attributes maintaining her top line, was parallel out and back creating a lovely unexaggerated, balanced picture.B.B and B.O.S. 2 Armstrongs, Lauralee Alexandrover, Another beautiful, mature red bitch with lots to like about her, longer cast throughout than winner, but with many similar attributes and comments.

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE MIDLAND DACHSHUND CLUB FOR INVITING ME TO JUDGE THEIR
CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW,THE WORK THAT DANIEL AND HIS TEAM PUT INTO THE SMOOTH RUNNING
OF THE SHOW IS OBVIOUS TO SEE.
THANKYOU TO THE EXIBITORS FOR THE LOVELY ENTRY YOU GAVE ME.
I HAVE TO SAY IN GENERAL I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE QUALITY OF SOME OF THE
EXIBITS TODAY,MY MAIN WINNERS PLEASED ME IMMENSLY.BUT SADLY THE NORM NOW SEEMS
TO BE SHORT NON EXISTANT NECKS,BAD SHOULDERS WITH VIRTUALLY NO ANGULATION AND
SHORT RIBBING,DACHSHUNDS ARE HOUNDS AND SHOULD MOVE AS SUCH NOT LIKE TOYS
TUMMY TAPPING WITH SHORT LITTLE STEPS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE TO ME BUT SEEMS TO BE
THE FASHION AT THE MOMENT, PRESENTATION IN A LOT OF CASES LEFT A LOT TO BE
DESIRED A QUICK SPRAY WITH GROOMING SPRAY BEFORE GOING IN THE RING IS NOT
ENOUGH AND THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR DIRTY TEETH.
  TEMPERAMENT IS MUCH IMPROVED.
I WOULD ALSO SAY THAT IF YOU ARE GOING TO SIT AT THE SIDE OF THE RING AND BE CRITICAL
TO OTHER EXIBITS THEN MAKE SURE YOUR OWN HOUSE IS IN ORDER FIRST AND YOU ARE NOT
SEING YOUR OWN STOCK THROUGH ROSE TINTED SPECTACLES, THERE SEEMS TO BE AN AWFUL
LOT OF BAD SPORTSMANSHIP WITHIN THE BREED , HEALTHY COMPETITION IS GOOD BUT
BE PLEASED FOR OTHERS AS WELL AS YOURSELFS,WE ALL TAKE THE BEST DOG HOME BUT AS
FAR AS THE BREED STANDARD GOES THERE IS QUITE A LONG WAY TO GO IN MANY CASES.

It is some ten years since I judged the breed last and during that time the breed has changed if todays entry is representative. Generally heads are much improved, with fewer round eyes and  associated over defined stops and weak muzzles. Coats on the whole were excellent, a few needed attention and some had been trimmed into shape to accentuate fronts or depth of brisket, pity. Movement was generally very good, though many exhibits clearly did not like the stripes on the floor. On the down side front assemblies still leave much to be desired with very short upper arms being common. There were many with flat, splayed, turned out feet. This is a working breed, a Dachshund with flat feet would not be able to do their job. These are all construction problems, but I was most concerned by the significant number of very nervous exhibits. This really needs addressing as soon as possible. MPD (2) 1 Presenails Taree Useless Loop. Dark brindle with pleasing head and dark eye. Well constructed with fabulous front. Correct jacket. Well angulated hind end. Movement OK Best Dog Puppy. 2 Hayward and Howells Fallowmill Cambera. Very attractive head, but not the front construction of 1. Very good hind movement. Crisp jacket, and a lovely temperament. PD (2,1) 1 Kugow and Holt's  Waldermeister Darby. Dark brindle with super jacket. Rather short in upper arm, but has good hind angulation. Keeps top-line on the move, but lost out for Best Dog puppy on hind movement. JD (3,2) 1 Jones Bimini Starstruck. Super little chap with lovely head and eye. Correct front assembly, with ribs carried well back. Excellent hind angulation, with correct movement fore and aft.  Super jacket. Excellent top-line at all times. Res. C.C. PGD (2) 1 Flower and Soderberg Baltiskiy Talisman Indiana Jones (Imp Rus) Amazing colour! Aristocratic head. Super hard coat, Very well boned. Reasonable feet. Very good hind angulation, and super top-line. 2 Hunts Earthsea's Billy The Kid. Pleasing head, and good coat. Needs to mature in all respects. LD (1) 1 Shone's Strax Gogol. Only 16 months. Very dark brindle with lovely head and eye. Excellent front assembly with tight thickly padded feet. Excellent jacket, though a little untidy in places. Hind quarters not as good as the front, and moves rather wide behind. Keeps top-line at all times. OD (6) Huge variation in type in this class.  I particularly liked the exhibit placed third, but he just would not cooperate with his handler on the move. 1 Rose's Ch. Ridanflight Ricardo. Super well balanced dog with good brindle coat. Pleasing head. Excellent front construction, with ribs carried well back. Correct movement in all respects. CC, BOB and res BIS. 2 Barney's Verrami En Trac Didn't grab me at all until I went over him. Good tight feet and hard coat. Well balanced. Good top-line and moved well. 3 Thorn-Andrews Drakesleat Hostile Takeova. Beautifully constructed well balanced dog who would not cooperate with his handler on the move. Such a pity. MPB (10,3) 1 Shone's Phantasia Lady. Super brindle with excellent coat. Good front construction. Pretty head. Moved very well with correct hind angulation.  Fabulous temperament 2 Billinghurst Drakesleat Mrs Shilling For Jiljac. Beautifully constructed with super coat. only 6 months and rather overwhelmed by the occasion. Super front and feet. Lovely dark eye. Very promising puppy. 3 Selley Ubu Frida Kahlo To Heleanne. PB (7,1) 1 Flowers and Smith Bingobongo's Short And Sweet. Super well balanced bitch with an excellent front and good reach of neck. Well angulated hind end. Correct movement fore and aft.  Lovely dark eye. 2 Morris Pennywave Uptown Girl. Very compact with lovely front construction. Not quite the flowing lines of 1 Super tight feet. Well angulated behind. Good depth all through. 3 Billinghurst Drakesleat Mrs Shilling For Jiljac. JB (9,1) 1 Russell's Russteck Sofair A Dream. And what a dream! Super dark brindle with an excellent front. Long reach of neck, giving lovely flowing lines. Very good tight thickly padded feet. Fabulous outline stood and on the move. Correctly angulated hind end. Harsh jacket. Beautifully presented. CC. 2 Fulton's Bothlyn Dancing Queen.  Unusual Chocolate and tan. The same comments apply as for the class winner, but not as confident as 1 and this reflected in her movement. 3 Blackburns Stargang Liberty Belle. PGB (9,4) 1 Kirkwood Helydon Fabulous Freya. Very little to choose between these two bitches. Both have good fronts and excellent coats. Pleasing heads. Both moved well. Preferred the better ground clearance of 1. 2 Morris Pennywave Top Totti. 3 Walkers Oselle Irenee. LB (10,2) 1 Haywards Foxearth Fatma Salkan. A true Dachshund in Miniature. Wonderful red, hard coat. Excellent front. Beautiful outline. Correctly angulated hind end. Very happy person. Res C.C. 2 Blackburns Stargang Compania Faerge. Pushed so hard. Lovely compact type. Fabulous when stood, but not very keen on the floor and this effected her movement. 3 Morris Stargang Quintina At Pennywave. OB (8) 1 Russells Russteck I Dreamed A Dream Very hard jacketed dark brindle. Not the front of 2, but has a short strong loin. Lovely outline stood and on the move. Correct Dachshund head in Miniature. Well angulated hind end. Very good feet. 2 Blackburn-Bennett, Stargang Walkin On Sunshine. Fabulous outline, with superb front. Not quite the jacket or feet of 1. Longer in the loin. Not keen on the floor surface. 3 Morris's Banburg Black Opal At Stargang. STAKES CLASSES V (8,3) 1 Mee's Barlaine's Summer Star. Mini Long. Wouldn't know she is a veteran.Fabulous front. Coat in excellent condition Perfect topline Moved out well 2 Vines Cishelvine Sea Swell.  An old favourite of mine, still looking very good, but a little out of coat today. Wonderful front. Topline still spot on. Well angulated behind. Aristocratic head 3 Haywards Ch. Foxearth Foto Copy. BRACE (5,1) 1 Phillips Brace. Very well matched pair. 2 Morris's Brace. 3 Morris Brace. MARY MASON MEMORIAL AV STANDARD (2) 1 Horn's Darsoms Zabbi. Impressive Std Long Well angulated.
