VHC:

A very interesting entry for my twelfth time giving CCs. in Wires (since 1976) and the first time I have ended-up with the male as Best of Breed! In fact the interest and competition appeared mainly to be in the males. The last appointment was at Southern Counties in 2011, so only a couple had been under me before and with differing fortunes, but you can only place them as you see the "on the day". It was nice to have so few absentees. As usual I tried to go for breed type, structure, coat, balance topped with a bit of character while avoiding the stodgier ones and making most of the decisions on the move. As for temperament, they were their usual delightful selves except the one that growled on the table) and this always makes Wires the most entertaining and enjoyable variety to judge and I'd rather they played around a bit than be drilled into standing like statues! Mouths were better that I expected with just a few rather tight bites - but still serviceable. Feet, however, were mainly as thin and flat as ever but there were not so many short keels. Some underlines could have been better shaped and length of ribbing appeared to be better in the bitches than the dogs. Angulation has improved over the years and not so many flatten in front on the move, but shoulder layback on some could be better. Most had hammy rears on the table but "bums" were often lost on the move with toplines falling away. Coats are more consistent these days - and there were some crackers - and these covering eager, free-moving dogs that could free stand when coming back to me made such dogs stand out and fill the eye. Reading the catalogue, as far as breeding went it turned out to be quite a Tendrow, Atahira, Cishelvine day and to find that my Best of Breed sired all four puppy class winners was a bonus and to watch that gorgeous puppy go Best Puppy in Show was the icing on the cake. MPD. (2,1) 1 Sorensen's Tendrow Time After Time. Nearly 7 months and what a start to my day! This red/brindle baby certainly made his mark in the ring, several times! A delightful character who holds so much promise. Good head and mouth, well-boned and oval-bodied with good head, neck and shoulders and a well angulated rear allowing him to be a free and easy mover when he got the hang of it. A real jelly baby of a pup and when he dries-up I'm sure the wins won't! Just loved him, Best Puppy and Best Puppy in Show. PD. (3,1) 1 Bellamys' Veneen Onyx Resetin Gold at Garjay. 10 months brindle by the BOB. Hard-coated with a topline to match, gentle underline, good forechest and well let-down rear of good width. Pleasing for head, neck, bone and feet. Could be a bit more positive in front but scored on his greater freedom of movement. 2 Herrods' Kindeace Wish You Were Here. Brindle the same age but far less ready at this stage. Good head, neck, topline and overall type covered by a cracking coat but outmoved by winner. JD. (2) Two litter brothers by Zucchini out of the lovely Black Orchid. 1 Vine's Derochaise Justified for Cishelvine. Lovely character with the harder coat and kept his outline better on the move; a bit low in front but moved freely. I preferred his length to height proportion. 2 Wharton and Pughe's Derochaise Black Tarquin. Handsome brindle, lighter colour than his brother and with a pleasing head and neck. Very stylish but a bit flat on top and longer. It will be interesting to see how they end-up. PGD. (4)
1 Langridge's Tendrow Elberta. Neat sized 21 month brindle who won this class with something in hand. Best length of rib so far and a lovely type, temperament and coat. Good head, neck, bone, oval through front, hard topline, well let-down rear. Moved well both ways and kept his outline going around. Nothing overdone and all in proportion. 2 Smiths' Jethard Two To Tango at Salixian. Smaller red a couple of months older. Good head, expression, coat, overall balance. Not the scope or freedom of movement of the winner but kept his shape better than the next two. 3 Clares' Bellavin's Illustrious. LD. (8) A good class that was very competitive and quite a headache to sort out with some I've admired in the past ending-up down the line. 1 Vine and Baxter's Cishelvine Red Admiral. A most impressive 3 year old red I can't remember seeing before and I was dying to find out who he was! Built like a good Smooth with all flowing lines and no sharp corners. Good head and a lovely line down his neck over his shoulders and along his topline and all kept on the move. Well angulated both ends and a free mover who was just a little untidy coming at me which is where the ultimate winner scored over him. Reserve CC. 2 Phillips' Wiretap Here I Am. 20 months red Canadian import who is so stylish with great presence and quality. Handsome head, hard topline and gentle underline. I thought at first he would be my winner, but he is still at the coltish stage and needs to drop and settle his angulation in front, lovely boy. 3 Paskins' Tendrow Replays The Red Guy at Kindeace. OD. (6) Another good class! 1 Phillips' Ch. Tendrow Replayed In Blue. The whole package. This handsome brindle is still only 21 months and out of the little red bitch who was my
BOB. last time. Everything I would want in a Wire and everything in balance both standing and on the move which he does with enthusiasm. Super type, handsome head, well-boned with good feet, complementary angulation and a fit, hard body covered with a super coat. Never left the issue in any doubt putting on a great performance. If he can continue to sire puppies like his first clutch, should be a great asset to the variety. CC and BOB. 2. Davies'Ch. Atahira Joie De Blue. Another lovely male. This 3 and a half year old brindle is another hard-coated, hard-bodied dog of unexaggerated type that I appreciated for his qualities. The sire of the winner and the greatest complement any stud dog can have is to stand second to his own son! 3. Warren's Wagsford Lincoln. MPB. (2) Phillips' Tendrow A Page In Time. Red brindle sister to the BP. Lovely baby, all over the place but sound both ways and free on the move. Oval through the front with good shoulders and body properties and well-made all round with nothing to change at this age. 2 Maxwells' Bardrestan Queen Of The South. Another lovely puppy of 7 months and a difficult choice between the two. Beautiful head, neck and outline and lovely length of ribbing. This is obviously a vintage year for pups if this entry is anything to go by. PB. (4)
1 Phillips' Tendrow Time'N Time Again. The third one from this lovely litter. Dark brindle of a neat size and well-balanced with nothing overdone. Agai oval-bodied with good head and eye, nicely angulated and good top and underlines. A difficult choice over her sister for Best Bitch Puppy. 2 Vine's Cishelvine Careless Wispa. A lengthier lighter brindle by the Res. C.C. winner and another lovely puppy nearly a year old. Another with a lovely outline but not quite the shoulder placement of the winner. 3 Rowes' Boloria's Tiger Lily. JB. (6) 1 Hastings' Lesandnic Sleepytime. Nearly 15 months lighter brindle and I see she is by a Norwegian dog from a kennel I've admired and out of my Junior winner from last time. Quite a big girl but in no way lacking in quality or femininity with good forechest, shoulders, head, neck and a well let-down rear and resulting in movement that was very positive. 2 Wharton's Greyhayne Lotty Merry. A good all-rounder who moved well keeping her shape, good shoulder placement and a better underline than the winner but not as good in coat qualities. Preferred her hindquarters to the third. 3 Pughe and Fraser's Bystock Extra Virgin. PGB. (4) 1 Vine's Gravetye Kiss Me Kate Cishelvine. Very nicely balanced 2 year old red with everything in proportion and well-angulated both ends. Nice balance of bone to size, a smooth neck into shoulderline, good top and underlines and a very free mover who went well both ways. 2 Clayton-Smith's Boloria's April Fool. I didn't really consider this little bitch to start with but once you get into her and look past the plain head and unattractive colour there's a lot to like about her and she grew on me as we went along. Very free-moving and sound with good length and outline, a very good underline and well let-down behind. Not one of the glamour girls but has so much to offer. 3 Kent's Liebling Blarney Stone. LB. (9) Biggest class and all present. 1 Warren's Wagsford Lydia. 2 year old dark brindle by Zucchini out of an Atahira bitch. Lovely type, big bodied and lovely all round with well-carried neck and good length of ribbing. Moved very well and positively both ways and covered the ground from the side with just a slight flattening over the croup. Very nicely coated and the one that added-up best overall among an entry of pleasing girls, earning her the CC. 2 Phillips' Hototo Swellegant Gal at Tendrow. Very nice type and coat, well constructed and well-bodied and moved well both ways but I'd like a bit more freedom in her front action to be really critical. 3 Davies' Tendrow Joie De Vivre by Atahira. OB. (6,2) This class was a real poser with a great battle between two lovely and mature bitches. 1 Phillips' Ch. Tendrow Peaches. 4 and a half year old red who had to really pull out all the stops and work on me as she came into the ring looking rather  "mumsy" after maternal duties and not tightened-up in underline. Such a well-made little bitch who can't stand or move wrongly with her shoulder placement and rear angulation. Stood second up to the last time I moved them around the ring when she just got better and better. Very interested to see that she is the dam of the puppies and of the Post-Grad. D. Reserve CC. 2 Pughe and Fraser's Ch. Bystock Pussy Galore. 4 and a half year old brindle of lovely size and type. Came under me last time and I wasn't that impressed at that stage but she has certainly come on a bundle as the finished article. Again good shoulder placement and rear angulation and all parts fit and flow. Very well-bodied but just a shade overdeep in the chest. Put up a great fight and was in lovely hard nick. Moved truly both ways, but not the great freedom of the winner. 3 Patersons' Ambiesque Allure.

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE MIDLAND DACHSHUND CLUB FOR INVITING ME TO JUDGE THEIR
CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW,THE WORK THAT DANIEL AND HIS TEAM PUT INTO THE SMOOTH RUNNING
OF THE SHOW IS OBVIOUS TO SEE.
THANKYOU TO THE EXIBITORS FOR THE LOVELY ENTRY YOU GAVE ME.
I HAVE TO SAY IN GENERAL I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE QUALITY OF SOME OF THE
EXIBITS TODAY,MY MAIN WINNERS PLEASED ME IMMENSLY.BUT SADLY THE NORM NOW SEEMS
TO BE SHORT NON EXISTANT NECKS,BAD SHOULDERS WITH VIRTUALLY NO ANGULATION AND
SHORT RIBBING,DACHSHUNDS ARE HOUNDS AND SHOULD MOVE AS SUCH NOT LIKE TOYS
TUMMY TAPPING WITH SHORT LITTLE STEPS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE TO ME BUT SEEMS TO BE
THE FASHION AT THE MOMENT, PRESENTATION IN A LOT OF CASES LEFT A LOT TO BE
DESIRED A QUICK SPRAY WITH GROOMING SPRAY BEFORE GOING IN THE RING IS NOT
ENOUGH AND THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR DIRTY TEETH.
  TEMPERAMENT IS MUCH IMPROVED.
I WOULD ALSO SAY THAT IF YOU ARE GOING TO SIT AT THE SIDE OF THE RING AND BE CRITICAL
TO OTHER EXIBITS THEN MAKE SURE YOUR OWN HOUSE IS IN ORDER FIRST AND YOU ARE NOT
SEING YOUR OWN STOCK THROUGH ROSE TINTED SPECTACLES, THERE SEEMS TO BE AN AWFUL
LOT OF BAD SPORTSMANSHIP WITHIN THE BREED , HEALTHY COMPETITION IS GOOD BUT
BE PLEASED FOR OTHERS AS WELL AS YOURSELFS,WE ALL TAKE THE BEST DOG HOME BUT AS
FAR AS THE BREED STANDARD GOES THERE IS QUITE A LONG WAY TO GO IN MANY CASES.

It is some ten years since I judged the breed last and during that time the breed has changed if todays entry is representative. Generally heads are much improved, with fewer round eyes and  associated over defined stops and weak muzzles. Coats on the whole were excellent, a few needed attention and some had been trimmed into shape to accentuate fronts or depth of brisket, pity. Movement was generally very good, though many exhibits clearly did not like the stripes on the floor. On the down side front assemblies still leave much to be desired with very short upper arms being common. There were many with flat, splayed, turned out feet. This is a working breed, a Dachshund with flat feet would not be able to do their job. These are all construction problems, but I was most concerned by the significant number of very nervous exhibits. This really needs addressing as soon as possible. MPD (2) 1 Presenails Taree Useless Loop. Dark brindle with pleasing head and dark eye. Well constructed with fabulous front. Correct jacket. Well angulated hind end. Movement OK Best Dog Puppy. 2 Hayward and Howells Fallowmill Cambera. Very attractive head, but not the front construction of 1. Very good hind movement. Crisp jacket, and a lovely temperament. PD (2,1) 1 Kugow and Holt's  Waldermeister Darby. Dark brindle with super jacket. Rather short in upper arm, but has good hind angulation. Keeps top-line on the move, but lost out for Best Dog puppy on hind movement. JD (3,2) 1 Jones Bimini Starstruck. Super little chap with lovely head and eye. Correct front assembly, with ribs carried well back. Excellent hind angulation, with correct movement fore and aft.  Super jacket. Excellent top-line at all times. Res. C.C. PGD (2) 1 Flower and Soderberg Baltiskiy Talisman Indiana Jones (Imp Rus) Amazing colour! Aristocratic head. Super hard coat, Very well boned. Reasonable feet. Very good hind angulation, and super top-line. 2 Hunts Earthsea's Billy The Kid. Pleasing head, and good coat. Needs to mature in all respects. LD (1) 1 Shone's Strax Gogol. Only 16 months. Very dark brindle with lovely head and eye. Excellent front assembly with tight thickly padded feet. Excellent jacket, though a little untidy in places. Hind quarters not as good as the front, and moves rather wide behind. Keeps top-line at all times. OD (6) Huge variation in type in this class.  I particularly liked the exhibit placed third, but he just would not cooperate with his handler on the move. 1 Rose's Ch. Ridanflight Ricardo. Super well balanced dog with good brindle coat. Pleasing head. Excellent front construction, with ribs carried well back. Correct movement in all respects. CC, BOB and res BIS. 2 Barney's Verrami En Trac Didn't grab me at all until I went over him. Good tight feet and hard coat. Well balanced. Good top-line and moved well. 3 Thorn-Andrews Drakesleat Hostile Takeova. Beautifully constructed well balanced dog who would not cooperate with his handler on the move. Such a pity. MPB (10,3) 1 Shone's Phantasia Lady. Super brindle with excellent coat. Good front construction. Pretty head. Moved very well with correct hind angulation.  Fabulous temperament 2 Billinghurst Drakesleat Mrs Shilling For Jiljac. Beautifully constructed with super coat. only 6 months and rather overwhelmed by the occasion. Super front and feet. Lovely dark eye. Very promising puppy. 3 Selley Ubu Frida Kahlo To Heleanne. PB (7,1) 1 Flowers and Smith Bingobongo's Short And Sweet. Super well balanced bitch with an excellent front and good reach of neck. Well angulated hind end. Correct movement fore and aft.  Lovely dark eye. 2 Morris Pennywave Uptown Girl. Very compact with lovely front construction. Not quite the flowing lines of 1 Super tight feet. Well angulated behind. Good depth all through. 3 Billinghurst Drakesleat Mrs Shilling For Jiljac. JB (9,1) 1 Russell's Russteck Sofair A Dream. And what a dream! Super dark brindle with an excellent front. Long reach of neck, giving lovely flowing lines. Very good tight thickly padded feet. Fabulous outline stood and on the move. Correctly angulated hind end. Harsh jacket. Beautifully presented. CC. 2 Fulton's Bothlyn Dancing Queen.  Unusual Chocolate and tan. The same comments apply as for the class winner, but not as confident as 1 and this reflected in her movement. 3 Blackburns Stargang Liberty Belle. PGB (9,4) 1 Kirkwood Helydon Fabulous Freya. Very little to choose between these two bitches. Both have good fronts and excellent coats. Pleasing heads. Both moved well. Preferred the better ground clearance of 1. 2 Morris Pennywave Top Totti. 3 Walkers Oselle Irenee. LB (10,2) 1 Haywards Foxearth Fatma Salkan. A true Dachshund in Miniature. Wonderful red, hard coat. Excellent front. Beautiful outline. Correctly angulated hind end. Very happy person. Res C.C. 2 Blackburns Stargang Compania Faerge. Pushed so hard. Lovely compact type.
